MetroMark Transit Oriented Development Comes to Jamaica Plain

A transit oriented development project is coming to Jamaica Plain, bringing 283 residential units and 5,000 square feet of retail space. 

Residential units have started leasing for MetroMark Apartments, ranging from studios up to three bedrooms. 

Other building amenities include a gym, yoga studio, a dog park and grooming room, club room, library, entertainment room and a communal roof deck. 

Residents will have access to multiple courtyard with fireplaces and grilling stations as well as a community cafe and beautiful high-end interiors. 

Parking will be available at the building as well as bicycle space, electric car charging stations and a bicycle repair workshop. 

The development is conveniently located across from the Forest Hills MBTA stop on the Orange Line, as well as the commuter rail and multiple bus lines. The Southwest Corridor bike path is also located close by.

Construction on MetroMark Apartments are scheduled to be complete April 2017.

Moving in to a new apartment this September? You're not alone. 

The beginning of September marks the busiest moving season in Boston, with students coming back to universities and leases beginning around the city welcoming new residents. 

If you're trying to prepare for the moving madness then you're in luck! City Hall has provided data based on moving truck permits that have been issued for the days from August 23rd through September 6th. 

In order to park a moving truck anyone must apply for a street occupancy permit, in order to restrict access to that area for a specified section of time. Thanks to this public data, you can view a heatmap of what areas will be the busiest during this fall's moving dates. 

Based on the map the busiest areas are Beacon Hill and the North End and more action around East Boston and South Boston compared to last year's data.

Southie Starbucks Approved

Southie Starbucks

A new Starbucks branch has finally been approved for Southie after voting for the new location was delayed and protested against. 

Boston's licensing board has now approved the coffeehouse's new location at L Street and East Broadway, a decision that caused months of controversy for worries of gentrification and increased traffic congestion. 

Residents have been worried about the chain would push out Mom and Pop shops in the area and other independent coffee shops. There was also concern for traffic and parking in the area. 

Starbucks has addressed these concerns and noted their desire to work with organizations within the community to give back and support them in any way they can. 

With other restaurants vying for the space, it has now been confirmed that Starbucks will take over the space.

One Charlestown Development Proposal Creates New Community

One Charlestown

One Charlestown is a huge redevelopment project that has been proposed for the Bunker Hill Apartments in Charlestown

The project plans to create 3,200 units of housing on the existing site, as well as create new beautiful buildings, well-lit, tree-lined streets and create a diverse neighborhood and community. 

The redevelopment will replace buildings that are currently isolated and underutilized, with new buildings that respect the rich history of the neighborhood and character of Charlestown. 

The project will also bring two new public parks, retail space and amenities for the whole neighborhood. 

Although the units will be a mixture of affordable and market-rate apartments, they will all be designed and completed to the highest quality and include the same amenities. 

The 13-block development aims to knit the neighborhood together with a new street grid that makes the area more walkable and easier to navigate.

Charlestown's rich history and character will be incorporate into the landscape design and architecture. 

The developers have emphasized the plans to put front doors directly on the streets, creating a sense of community and making friendly neighborhood streets throughout the development. 

By replacing current surface parking with more green space the project aims to further encourage this development of community and preservation of history within the area. 

Plans for this beautiful new community have been presented to the Boston Redevelopment Authority and are awaiting review. Check back here for any future updates.

Moving into a new apartment involves plenty of planning and more than just packing a few boxes and buying new furniture. 

Since most leases in Boston will turn over at the beginning of September, finding movers and dealing with parking and other necessities can be competitive, so it's best to research and plan as much as you can in advance. 

The City of Boston has put together a handy guide to reserving parking for your moving day, learning about resident parking and other tips that will help your move go smoothly. 

  • Moving vans and parking- If you're going to be using a moving van or a truck then it is best to get  a one-day parking permit to guarantee a spot and avoid tickets. It's best to apply for this as early as possible. Find out how here.
  • Traffic and driving on September 1st- In order to alleviate traffic on one of the busiest days in Boston, many streets are closed and parking is restricted in certain areas. Be sure to check ahead to see how these closures could affect your move. Also remember that moving trucks are not allowed on Storrow Drive due to low clearance!
  • Household waste- It is important to learn the best way to get rid of waste properly in your new neighborhood and to be aware of rules and regulations when getting rid of larger household items. On the Boston Trash Day App you can view the collection schedule for your neighborhood, set up notifications search which of your materials are recyclable and more. 
  • Resident Parking- There are a number of options when it comes to getting a resident parking permit and many steps you need to follow in order to prove your new residency and register in your neighborhood. You can find a step-by-step guide on the City of Boston website.

      Washington Village Plans to Reinvent Andrew Square

      Washington Village

      A huge new development for South Boston's Andrew Square has just been approved by the Boston Redevelopment Authority.

      Washington Village was first proposed in 2015 and hopes to redefine the surrounding area by taking over nearly five acres with new development. 

      The village would be made up of nine buildings with a range of heights up to 21 stories high. They will completely replace the current auto shops and laundries that make up the space. 

      The proposal includes 656 apartments and condos, over 98,000 square feet of retail, most likely including a grocery store, parking spaces and plenty of open space with newly improved streets, walkways and plazas. 

      Andrew Square has been studied by the BRA for a while, with the hopes of transforming the industrial blocks for residential and commercial buildings over the next two decades. The overall projects could bring up to 8,000 new residential units to the area in total. 

      If all goes to plan for Washington Village then construction is planned to be complete by 2021.

      New South Boston Construction on West Third Street

      45 West Third Street

      A new construction is coming to South Boston, bringing over 100 new rental units and ground floor retail space. 

      The 45 West 3rd Street project was approved by the Boston Redevelopment Authority and will bring a four story building to the site. 

      Exact amenities and details have yet to be released, but the project is located just steps from West Broadway on the Red Line and also provides easy access to the Seaport and downtown Boston. 

      This project aims to help continue the development of the South Boston residential community, as well as make use of an underused area close to public transportation.

      Along with the new development the project will include improvements to the streetscape in the area, widening sidewalks, adding additional lighting and planting more trees and adding to the creation of a vibrant community. 

      South Boston is currently undergoing a transformation into a more vibrant residential community and this project comes along with a number of ongoing residential projects, including 11 West Broadway, 339 D Street and more.

      The units will be aimed at a mixture of residents including young couples and families.

      Parking Options to Consider When Renting Your Next Apartment

      When you're looking to rent your new home there is much more than the basic rent fee that you need to account for. Other bills include electricity, internet, furniture, heat, gas and more, but how much would you add on to park your car? 

      According to Multifamily Executive, in a survey of 84,000 renters across the country, 67% of own a car and 21% of renters own two cars, meaning that 88% of people will need somewhere to park. 

      But there are a number of different parking options in most cities, all with a variety of prices. But how much are renters willing to pay for a dedicated spot, or even a covered spot rather than have to deal with open parking? 

      The survey showed that 60% of renters would pay for a dedicated parking spot, with 46% saying they would pay $25 a month for a reserved outdoor spot and 14% saying they would pay $75 a month for a reserved carport.

      The results showed that almost all demographics were willing to pay for a spot, but the older the driver, the more they were willing to contribute to ease the hassle of finding an open spot.
